VyPr VPN 2018 Review

VyprVPN is a popular VPN based on Switzerland aware of privacy and comes from the same stable company as ISP Texas Texas, Data Foundry, and Giganews, the leading provider of Usenet.

The service caught our attention with impressive specifications: 73 server locations, unlimited data usage, over 200,000 IP addresses, secure DNS servers, one switch, and more.

There are apps and installation instructions to run the service on almost all platforms: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, smart TVs and multiple types of routers.

The standard VyprVPN plan allows three simultaneous connections, and the price is 6.95 denars ($ 8.70) per month billed per month or 4.08 (5.10 dollars) per month charged each year.

VyprVPN Premium increases the limit on five simultaneous connections and adds support to the Chameleon protocol of the company to help overcome the VPN block. You pay £ 10.50 ($ 13) per month, or £ 5.83 ($ 7.30) per month, billed each year.

The Golden Frog does not block torrent traffic but warns that “subscribers that are repeat offenders of illegally protected materials or other illegal content” will close their accounts. Combine this with recording sessions (more at that time) and this service is apparently not the best solution for heavy P2P users.

There are cheaper VPNs, around which five links are supported, but if you can live with three links, VyprVPN offers a lot of private energy for a very reasonable price. The company also offers a 3-day trial, which allows you to check the quality of the service quickly.

privacy

The VyprVPN privacy policy is clear, straightforward and extremely short, much better than the lengthy legal jargon that will often be bombed elsewhere.

The document directs each part with a plain text that explains exactly what it wants to answer: “What Golden Data Frog Holds VyprVPN Sessions,” or “Like Golden Breton Answers to Criminal Investigations,” and so on.

Each section gives only short details, but they still manage to cover what you need to know.

The good news is that the service does not register your traffic within a session, does not perform package inspections, does not discriminate devices or protocols, and does not speed up or restrict Internet connection.

There is a session registration, as explained by the company:

“Every time a user enters the VyprVPN, we keep the following data for 30 days: the IP address of the user source, the IP address of the VyprVPN used by the user, the start time and the termination link and the total number of bytes used.

This data is kept for 30 days “to be used for billing, problem-solving, service offer evaluation, TOS issues, AUP issues and service crime management.”

This means that VyprVPN will not register that you have visited the X website or downloaded the Y torrent but that it keeps an audit trail that can allow others to recognise it. If an investigator has the VyprVPN IP address you used to act, and within 30 days he may ask a court to require the company to submit its writings, it will be possible for that action to be linked to your account.

Keeping this in perspective is essential. Many VPNs do something similar: all that happens here is that VyprVPN is quite frank to speak to you about it explicitly and explicitly. And if you use the regular navigation service, it probably will not matter. But if you ask for full anonymity, no matter what you do, it may not be the VPN that is right for you.

We went to the terms of the service page, where most of the clauses appeared to be very standard: do not use the service to do illegal things, take responsibility for your actions, services will be automatically renewed if you do not cancel your service. Account, and soon.

It’s not just a catch on the reimbursement policy, which says you will never, never under any circumstances. It is much stricter than most companies, but if you think you can try the service adequately during the three-day free trial, it can not make any difference.

Performances

Sign up for VyprVPN, and you’re welcome to provide much more information than usual. Delivery of your email address is healthy, but the company also requires your first and last name, country of collection and zip code.

If you can live with it, the rest of the registration process seems quite familiar: choose the monthly or annual plan, enter your details and pay in the usual way. We accepted PayPal and approved the payment, but we sent a blank page to the Golden Frog website without any information about our request.

Fortunately, a welcome email arrived a few minutes later with a “Confirm Account” link, and a click on that page opened a more useful page with download links and installation guides.

We recovered a copy of the Windows client by downloading it and installing it in a few seconds. It looked relatively compact, taking only 10 MB of disk space, but its background processes were more resource intensive. The VyprVPN service and the client typically consume 110 MB of RAM in total, more than four times the requirements of the lighter IVNV, for example.

The client has an attractive interface that includes a real-time graph of its upload and download speeds. Your current IP address is highlighted, and there is also a clear view of the status of your NAT firewall and your preferred VPN protocol, details that other clients typically bury in your configuration dialogue box.

Touch the Auto Connect button to connect to the faster server, or you can choose your preferred option from the full list of servers.

The customer can view locations by continent, name or speed. A search box displays matches during input, or you can save frequently used locations to a list of favourites.

VyprVPN favourites are also available directly from the context menu of the system tray icon. This also displays practical details such as your IP address and connection status. This seems evident to us but is rarely implemented by other VPNs.

The most impressive feature of the client is probably the Settings dialogue box, a well-thought-out combination of options that has something for each user level.

You get precise control of the connections, for example. You can make the service connect as soon as Windows starts, or when the client starts, or when you access untrusted Wi-Fi networks.

There are several notification settings. You can ask the client to alert you to each connection and disconnection event, or just for connection failures, and possibly play different audio files during login or log out. It may seem trivial, but do not reject it. Other services can annoy you with regular pop-ups or do not give you precise notification of disconnections, so being able to control this is a definite advantage.

This is a similar story with the Protocol tab. You do not just have to choose between OpenVPN, L2TP / IPsec and PPTP. You can configure OpenVPN with your choice of encryption level, port settings, or if you subscribed to the Premium plan, specify the VyprVPN Chameleon protocol to (theoretically) best ignore the VPN blockers.

If you know what you’re doing, the Advanced tab allows low-level settings for TAP, MTU, Routing Delay or TLS, and you can also add custom OpenVPN settings to your file. Configuration. There are many powers of experts.

The performance was impressive in our tests *. The speeds for our local server in the UK have averaged 36 Mbps and never dropped below 33 Mbps. The move to French, German and other places near Europe has changed little, with speeds exceeding 30 Mbps.

US connections were more variable at 15-25 Mbps, and connections between UK and Asian countries reached a difference of 3-5 Mbps, which was even better than what we saw with many competitors.

The good news continued until the end when we finished the review with a series of leak tests. Whatever we do, VyprVPN has preserved our privacy by blocking DNS and WebRTC leaks.

Final verdict

The excellent performance of VyprVPN and its powerful clients make it an excellent choice for some people, but massive P2P users should consult daily security policies.

  • Discover the best VPN services of 2018 and get a clear view to about the best VPN offers on the market. * Our tests included evaluation of the best VPN services on the market. Overall performance (navigation, video transmission). We also used speedtest.net to measure latency, download and download speeds, and then immediately tested the deactivated VPN to check the difference (in several test laps). We then compare these results with other VPN services we have examined. Of course, note that VPN performance is difficult to measure because there are so many variables.
